Hiking the Skerwink Trail with a toddler

We have been wanting to hike the Skerwink trail for so long, and we finally did, less than two weeks from our move date! We love visiting Two Whales coffee shop (here, here), which is really close to the trail, and we have also stayed at Fisher's loft hotel (here), minutes from the trail. I was always a little hesitant to take Cohen on a hike like this, because he sometimes loves his carrier, and sometimes hates it.

(Cohen is newly obsessed with maps, so we spent some time examining the trail map)

(Family selfie. Cohen suddenly refuses to wear sunglasses.)

(Happy in the carrier. Absolutely necessary for this hike)

(Stopping for lunch: leftover pizza and cookies)

So the Skerwink trail was so, so nice. We loved it. Very well maintained, and very difficult in some spots. There were times where I had to use my hands to pull myself up to the next stair. I have heard hike leaders call stairs like that "monkey stairs." It was pretty impressive that Jon did the hike with 40+ pounds on his back. More about this hike with a toddler....

Toddlers absolutely would need to be in a carrier for at least 4 of the 6.5 km of the hike. I can't imagine any parent trusting their toddler enough to let them walk that close to huge cliffs. Plus, a toddler would not even be able to get over a lot of the stairs. Cohen was able to walk for the first km before we got to the start of the stairs, then he was able to walk again for the last km. We sat in the grass for lunch at the top of the trail about halfway through the hike. As soon as Cohen got out of the carrier we made him sit on the ground and wouldn't let him get up until we were putting him in his carrier again. You can't tell from the pictures, but the cliff edges were always a few metres away (or less). I would only recommend this trail for toddlers who are cool with being in a carrier for an hour straight. The whole thing took us maybe 1.5 hours, including stopping for lunch. We had such a good time, and were completely exhausted after. We went to Trinity after for a snack and coffees because Two Whales was super busy. Such a good day.
